history
Team 100, The Wildhats, was founded in 1995 at Woodside High School and was the first FRC team on the West Coast. We expanded in 2003 with the addition of students from Carlmont High School and worked together until 2015 when they founded Team 199, Deep Blue. Our founding teacher and mentor, Arlene Kolber, led the Wildhats until her retirement in 2019.
Game demands and team capabilities have grown significantly since the Wildhats’ founding year. From 1995 through 2006 all our robots were built with simple tools, and from 2007 to 2009 we worked in a machine shop at a student’s home to fabricate more advanced parts until Woodside High School opened its own. In August 2017, The Wildhats moved into a new, state-of-the-art STEM Education Center where we can fabricate all the intricate parts necessary to build robots and challenge the best teams in the world.
The Wildhats’ whimsical mascot originated with our founding mentor. It can be difficult to find all the team members in the hectic atmosphere of a robotics competition, so Ms. Kolber had us all wear hats in team colors so that she could easily identify us. The hats we wore became synonymous with Team 100 and our original mascot, a hat-wearing wildcat, became the wiggling, dancing, and jumping hat that is now an integral part of our team brand.
